Human_Rts7AMMAN — Rana Husseini -  A UN official and an international activist, who are in Jordan to follow up on UN recommendations on the status of human rights in the Kingdom, on Thursday praised the country’s efforts in this field.

“We are here on a mission to observe Jordan’s implementation of the UN Human Rights Committee (HRC) recommendations,” said Liliana Trillo Diaz, human rights officer at the Centre for Civil and Political Rights in Geneva, who is on a three-day visit to the country along with Cees Flinterman, an HRC member, upon an invitation from the Amman Centre for Human Rights Studies.

Diaz told reporters that they met with representatives of the relevant ministries, civil society and diplomatic missions.

She said their visit focused on three articles that are part of a list of 20 recommendations suggested by the HRC for Jordan in October 2010.

The articles include providing more independence for the National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR), ending the practice of administrative detention by amending the Law on Crime Prevention, and abolishing the State Security Court.

“We are hopeful that the government will amend the Law on Crime Prevention and release all prisoners or speed up their judicial process,” Diaz told reporters.

She noted that the recommendations suggested more financial and administrative independence for the NCHR, said Diaz.

Flinterman described the meeting with the stakeholders as "very positive" and said Jordanian officials were cooperative and promised to respond to the HRC recommendations in an official report.
