Founding committee to be announced Friday
AMMAN - Laila Azzeh - The formation of the founding committee for the teachers association will be announced Friday, according to a senior official.
The council, which will comprise a president and six working teachers, will be responsible for overseeing preparations for the association’s elections and will have six months to complete its work, Minister of Education Tayseer Nueimi told reporters on Wednesday.
“The committee will serve as the association council in the meantime and will have no authority beyond what is stipulated in the law… its only responsibility will be to obtain the lists of teachers’ names and review membership applications,” he said.
Nueimi added that the committee will also raise awareness among the Kingdom’s teachers on the upcoming elections to ensure that those eligible to participate do so.
“We held discussions with teachers to hear their opinions on the standards that should be considered in formulating the founding committee,” the minister noted.
A Royal Decree was issued last month approving the 2011 Teachers Association Law, which was endorsed by the Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament in late July, fulfilling a decades-old demand by educators across the Kingdom.
The law stipulates that membership in the association is mandatory for all teachers working for the education ministry, while administrative staff, technicians and engineers working in the school system can also join the syndicate as long as they are not members of other associations.
According to the law, the administrative committee in each governorate will comprise 12 members, in addition to one representing each educational directorate and another for every 1,000 teachers affiliated with that directorate.
The central committee of the association will be made up of the administrative committees elected at the governorate level and its members will elect the president, vice president and a 13-member council for a two-year term.
