Council to discuss JPA law amendments next week
AMMANÂ - Hani Hazaimeh -Â The Jordan Press Association (JPA) council will begin looking into the recently proposed amendments to the JPA law next Sunday, JPA Spokesperson Ikhlas Qadi said on Wednesday.
The JPA council’s weekly meeting yesterday covered challenges facing the media and means to improve the profession and address obstacles hindering its performance, as well as complaints filed by journalists to the association regarding violations of press freedoms, she told The Jordan Times.
"There are intruders to the profession who are defaming its reputation with their unprofessional work, which has never complied with the ethics of the profession. The council members touched on the best means to address this issue by setting rules and guidelines to be adhered to by all stakeholders," Qadi said.
She added that press freedom and responsible performance are key to safeguarding an organised profession that ensures the protection of a person's dignity, stressing that the JPA rejects any attempt to damage the reputation of any individual, group, or institution without solid grounds.
The council reiterated that laws governing the media sector must be amended in partnership and coordination with the association in order to ensure that any change in the legislative environment does not undermine press freedoms or the freedom of expression, according to Qadi.
Next week, the council will also discuss the specialised unit it plans to form to respond to journalists’ grievances as well as draft instructions for the electronic media forum, which the JPA aims to launch within one week, Qadi said, adding that the council will invite association members and online media stakeholders to a workshop to discuss the establishment of the forum.
Membership in the forum, which will be administered by online media stakeholders and operate under the umbrella of the JPA, is optional and members will enjoy the same privileges offered to JPA members, the spokesperson told The Jordan Times previously.
